Every so often you meet someone who’s kindness and generosity chokes you up and can be quite overwhelming.
This post is written as a ‘thank you’ to one particular person who I will leave un-named, plus many others I have met along the way since I became the owner of my first allotment, No.27.
I have tried to share my journey with as many people as possible through my blog, Twitter, Instagram and joining Facebook allotment groups, in particular ‘The Allotment Shed Forum’. In the hope of trying to change the stereotype, and more importantly inspire and help other new ‘allotmenteers’.
The Allotment Shed Forum is where I met one very kind lady, who although I never met her in person yet has always helped me with many questions and this week sent me some cut flower seeds. It was the hand written letter that she sent with the seeds and in particular the last sentence that choked me up at my desk first thing Wednesday morning.
“Good luck! You’re already doing a fab job :)”
These words have made my week! They might not sound like much and might not have taken long to write but mean everything to me. This is because I have spent months researching and the last few months working as hard as I can to get the plot ready in time for Spring. Also, from day 1 trying to not cut any corners and do things the lazy quicker ways which could cause damage to wildlife or make more work in the future.
Thank you to the many other wonderful people I have met both at my allotments and online. I have had generous advise and feedback galore, donated raspberry canes and other neighbours allowing me access to their tools if needed. All from people expecting nothing in return.
Gardeners have to be some of kindest people I have met and have my made my journey so far even more enjoyable and a lot less daunting.

Also, if you see someone trying their hardest and you can help them in anyway then do what you can, even if its the smallest thing! It’s the smallest things that mean the most.
What a really lovely and fantastic post. I completely agree. My own experiences on the allotment have been very similar. Allotmenteers are a wonderful bunch.

Lovely post. I agree with all you say, having met many such people during the time I’ve had my plot. I never cease to surprised and delighted by people’s generosity. I’m always happy to advise, encourage and help when I can.
I grow the cosmos ‘Xanthos’ last year and will be again this year as it’s a delightful flower. I grow lots of pot marigolds as they’re my favourites, and among my ‘Flighty’s favourites’ are ones that look like ‘Whoopsy Daisy’ (great name!). xx
Something very similar happened to me on my allotments. First timer ladt year and was given onion plants, strawberry plants and tomatoes. Also parsnip seeds that grew.
It definitely helps you feel welcome and not on your own when you are just starting out 🙂
What a beautiful blog. I also got my new allotment last year, July 25th 2015. Mine looked very overgrown just like yours. It’s been hard work to get it ready for this year but I can’t wait. Good luck with your plot. I shall look forward to following you.
